Layout a resume or home page in HTML and CSS. The goal of this exercise is to get you familiar with some of the intricacies of HTML and CSS. If you are already comfortable in HTML/CSS, feel free to go deeper.

Craft a few sample datasets. Individually or with one other person, practice crafting a realistic dataset. The result should be a CSV file and a description of why that dataset is "realistic".
-
Learn a bit of HTML + CSS: If you aren't familiar with HTML, spend a bit of time getting up to speed on it. You should know these tags: div, span, h1, p, ul, ol, li. Likewise, you should know how to do basic styling in CSS. I have enjoyed using Code School but I have also heard good things about Codecademy. There's probably also a million other things out there. If you are having trouble, shoot me an e-mail and we can do a session together.

Take one of the datasets that you have gathered. Design a simple screen around that data which presents the data. Good candidates are search results, tables, or profile screens.
Assigned: 30 Sep 2014
-
Using some of the tools we used in class, gather data for 3+ sources. Keep in mind that it might not be feasible to actually gather data using the tools we discussed from every website. Get the data to the point where you can visualize it in some manner. This could be a simple plot in MATLAB or Excel or using the InDesign DataMerge feature to show the information. The assignment for next week will have you use this data to design a screen.
-
Review CSS selectors, if you aren't familiar with them. SitePoint has a good resource. This app also has a really cute and fun way to test your selector skills

Bring in a dataset that is relevant to you. Examples include your location history for a few days, e-mails you have received over a time period, or length of recent phone calls. Pull out from the dataset one particularly interesting insight. Send Ben a slide with some representation of that dataset.
